There are newcomers in the garden: lemon balm and chives from Edith in exchange for my second hyssop plant. (I also gave her a bag full of lettuce, since it needed thinning in the worst way.) “It smells wonderful!” she exclaimed. “When do I harvest the leaves?” I didn’t know, so I referred her to that indefatigable advice-giver, the Internet. (Apparently the answer is like most herbs, after they’re well grown but before they’ve flowered.) I planted the lemon balm and the chives in the middle of the parsley plot, moving the two parsley plants that actually came up to make room. They smell wonderful.

And the peas at least must not have minded being let roam free, because my first pea pods have arrived.
